The Flower Girl

“Three years ago, a young girl went into the forest. She was only 8 and she was going to find some flowers. Unfortunately, she got a bit lost. She was told to stay on the path but when you see a nice flower you must go and get it. Then you see another and you get that and you get further and further away from the path. This girl was lost for days and everyone got very worried. Some policemen came and searched for her and the forest was alive every night with the howling of detective dogs but they could not find her. Although they never found a body, they believed the girl was dead. The only evidence that anything may have happened were the wilting flowers in her little basket.” Melanie held the torch closer to her face, “and that’s the story of the ghost girl who haunts these woods, some of the people who have come in to pick flowers have never come back out...”

“Yeah, Melanie. Very scary. I’m going to faint I’m so scared!” Josh laughed. The pair sat there in silence for a little while, grinning at each other.

Most people think that at the age of 11 two friends shouldn’t be allowed to camp in the woods alone. But Melanie and Josh both had unusual parents who let them go without a fight. No one knew it would happen. No one saw it coming. How could they?

“Melanie I’m going to get some firewood!” Josh walked over to the path and started searching for some wood. He scanned his torch across the floor until he saw a basket. It was empty and very old. He picked it up and turned it over. Something was engraved on the side. It said I can see you. Josh dropped the basket in shock and ran back to camp. “Melanie. There’s a basket. It had something written on it. I swear I’m not lying! I promise. It’s that girl’s basket, the one in the story!”

“I believe you Josh. Why wouldn’t I? Afterall, you’re right. It’s that girl’s basket. My basket. I’m that girl. I did die. I didn’t deserve to. I was only 8 but things happen in life. People die when looking for flowers and it’s unfair. Why should you get to live while I must die. That’s why I came for you. Because don’t you remember 3 years ago when you came to the woods with your parents. You saw me with my basket, and you didn’t do anything. You went with your parents. I’m that girl’s ghost. I’m here to kill you, Josh. Deal with it.”

“No please, Melanie. We have been friends for 3 years now- oh. It all adds up now. Please Melanie. I didn’t know you were going to die. I didn’t know I should talk to you. I really am sorry. Please don’t kill me!” Josh took a step back, tripping over a log. He closed his eyes. They never opened again.

“Finally! I have completed my job. I can rest! Goodbye world. I have completed my mission in life.” Melanie looked up to the sky and screamed, “I’m ready to leave! Take me, God!”

The trees swayed with Melanie, dancing in the breeze. The moon looked down upon her and gave her its light. The fire glared and the skies opened. A black-hole-like structure came down sweeping Melanie up with the wind. Melanie waved goodbye to her friend and never looked back. She had avenged her death, finally.

The end
